Guidance published on advanced paramedic practitioners
Health Technology Wales has published guidance on the use of advanced paramedic practitioners in pre-hospital emergency care.
Advanced paramedic practitioners have undergone post-graduate training that enables them to make more independent clinical decisions than paramedics who have had standard training. They are also able to carry extra equipment and medicine.
It has been suggested that the use of advanced paramedic practitioners can reduce the number of people taken to hospital and enable more people to receive appropriate care within the community.
According to HTW’s guidance, there is limited evidence available on using advanced paramedic practitioners compared to standard care. It recommends that further research is needed, including into the cost and cost effectiveness of using advanced paramedic practitioners.
